If you've ever put a harness on a cat only to watch them Houdini their way out of it in under ten seconds, you're not alone. Moon has escaped three different harnesses in his lifetime — which is exactly why getting the fit right isn't optional, it's the whole game.
Here's the thing: an ill-fitting harness isn't just annoying, it's a genuine escape risk. Too loose, and your cat can back out of it or slip a leg through. Too tight, and it's uncomfortable enough that they'll fight you every time you bring it out. The sweet spot is snug enough that you can't pull it over their head, with just enough room to slide two fingers flat underneath.
What you'll need
A soft tape measure (a piece of string and a ruler works in a pinch), a calm cat, and a treat or two for cooperation.
Step 1: Measure the chest girth
Wrap the tape around your cat's ribcage, just behind the front legs — this is the widest part of their chest and the measurement that matters most for harness fit. Keep the tape snug but not tight, the way the harness itself should sit.
Step 2: Measure the neck
Wrap the tape around the base of the neck, where a collar would normally sit. This matters for collar sizing and for harnesses with a neck strap.
Step 3: Match to size
Small typically fits cats with a smaller chest girth (kittens and slimmer adult cats). Medium fits average to larger adult cats. If your cat's measurement falls right on the line between sizes, size up — a slightly looser fit is safer and more comfortable than one that's too snug. Step 4: Do the two-finger test
Once the harness is on, you should be able to slide two fingers flat between the strap and your cat's body — no more, no less. If you can fit a whole hand, it's too loose. If you can barely get one finger in, size up.
A note from the Lab
